Miami: A city of southeast Florida on Biscayne Bay south of Fort Lauderdale. Settled in the 1870s near the site of a fort built in 1836, it expanded greatly during the land boom of the 1920s and again after World War II. Today it is an important resort and cruise center for the Caribbean. Population: 358,548.

The peninsula was explored by Juan Ponce de León in 1513 and became the center of a Spanish settlement that included the southeast part of the present-day United States.
